This town owes its name to the amount of water that existed in the area.
The history of Bohonal de Ibor is bound to that of Talavera la Vieja, a nearby town that is now underwater in the Valdecañas reservoir. When Talavera la Vieja flooded, part of the land was annexed to Bohonal. Remains of two Roman temples belonging to the ancient Augustóbriga survived as they were transported stone by stone and placed next to the bridge of the Valdecañas reservoir, near the EX-118 road between Navalmoral and Guadalupe.
Another important place to visit if you come to Bohonal is the church, dedicated to San Bartolomé and dating from the late 15th-early 16th century. A bell tower with a clock was added to the building in the second decade of the 20th century.
Other places not to be missed are Cancho huevo, Cancho la Vieja, the Pibor dolmen and Las Veredas bridge.
As for the gastronomy of Bohonal, the most important dishes are fried kid and tomato soup. But if you have more of a sweet tooth, you shouldn't leave without trying "floretas" and "pestiños". -
