Montemolín Castle was built on the remains of an old Almohad fortress and became one of the most important strategic enclaves in Badajoz.
Montemolín Castle is in the province of Badajoz, it stands on a hilltop near the Sierra Morena. This fortress is Moslem in origin and responds to the Almohad strategy to create a line of castles across the province to stop the Christian advance. Nevertheless, in 1248 it fell into the hands of the Order of Santiago who built the present castle using masonry over the remains of the old Moslem citadel.
In the present day, the whole building is in ruins, but you can still see how its structure with towers and a surrounding wall was adapted to the steep terrain. The thickness of its walls and the earthen mound over which they were built are typical of the Almohad style, and the keep is noteworthy for having housed the Casa de la Encomienda of the Order of Santiago. In the interior you will also find the remains of the church dedicated to Santo Domingo. -
