Constructed on the ruins of the Muslim castle of Mojáfar, this fortress in the province of Badajoz was the administrative centre of the command of Lares in the 13th century.
Built in the 13th century, the castle of La Encomienda, also known as Castilnovo, still rises proudly above the ancient ruins of the Muslim castle of Mojáfar, located a few kilometres from the municipality of Villanueva de la Serena in Badajoz province. This fortress was occupied by the commanders of the Order of Alcántara and was the administrative centre of the region.
Its importance is still visible today, thanks to the good state of repair of the three zones that make up this castle: the original nucleus, the rampart with its battlements and the enclosure which was later added in front of the big towers. You can enjoy this masonry construction from the outside only, as the enclosure is fenced off because this is a private property.
