This town takes its name from a square marble fountain from the Renaissance period, the sign of a town that has been marked by history from the outset
Bordering the Tierra de Barros and Zafra-Río Bodión regions, surrounded by a wall, Fuente del Maestre has been catalogued as a Historic Cultural Heritage Site because of its archaeological, historic and monumental riches. Fuente del Maestre bears traces of practically every period from Prehistory and Antiquity, from the Paleolithic to the Roman Empire.
We know that Christianity quickly took root because of the volume of decorative archaeological remains of small churches from the late-Roman and Hispano-Visigothic periods.
Tombs from the Muslim period have been found close to the parish church which is, of course, a place you must visit. The church consists of three harmonious parts: one is Gothic-Mudejar; another is Hispano-Flemish; and the third is Renaissance. The sacristy -a Plateresque masterpiece- merits particular attention.
Opposite the parish church we find the Town Hall, with its outstanding crenellated Neo-classical facade. And as you stroll around, remember to look down and enjoy the mosaic paving of Plaza de España.
Other religious buildings that merit your attention include the Franciscan convent, the Santa Lucía and Señora del Buensuceso chapels and the San Juan, Espíritu Santo and Concepción churches.
It is also worth visiting the Fuente del Corro, a square, marble construction that gives the town its name, and the traditional towers of the 17th and 186h century oil mills.
You should also see the Gran Maestre palace, currently used as a pensioners' care centre, and the Gómez-Jara palace, the Quintanos mansion and the remains of the Convent House temple with the oratory of Saint Peter and Saint Paul.
