The Battle of La Albuera

Every year in May, the people of La Albuera take to the streets in arms and in period dress to commemorate the events of 16 May 1811. There are parades, a theme market recalling the period and, of course, the battle is theatrically re-enacted with a large number of participants.

The fact is the Battle of Albuera, in which allied troops came to fight against the French and to put a stop to the Napoleonic invasion, would change the life of the locals forever.

So, if you happen by what Fernando VII at the time called this “Very Heroic Town of La Albuera” in mid-May, you will very likely find yourself in the middle of “a battle” considered to be a Festivity of Tourist Interest in Extremadura.
