A strategic location

Location and Contact:

  • Thanks to its privileged location this town in Badajoz has been inhabited by many different people, who have enriched its architecture and traditions.

One of the main attractions in this municipality is its history as a strategic location for the Moors, as it is situated on the border between Andalusia and Extremadura. But many centuries ago it was also influenced by the people of Lusitania, Beturia and Tartessos, and the Christians, who occupied it in the 13th century and made it part of the Order of Santiago.

Its traditional look has not changed over the years – you can still see it in its buildings and fortress, which is the most important landmark in the area. Erected by the Moors and rebuilt by the Christians, it still preserves its bent entrance, a few wells and the dungeons. But this is not all – you can also visit two large churches: the Church of Nuestra Señora de la Concepción and the Church of Nuestra Señora de la Granada, which has a Baroque altarpiece and highly valuable tiling from Seville.

There were many shrines in this town in the past, such as Los Mártires San Fabián, or San Sebastián, of Mudejar origin.

But there are also other interesting places in Montemolín, such as a medieval bridge, the Grande and Bejarana fountains, and many coats of arms on old ancestral homes. All these things are best enjoyed during its most important festivities, such as Santiago Apóstol, San Isidro or San Blas. You can also enjoy its typical gastronomy, including "caldereta" stew, cold meats and fried suckling pig.
