The carnival is possibly the most important festival of the year in Badajoz
In Badajoz Carnival is celebrated in all its splendour and has been declared a Festivity of National Tourist Interest. It is the most popular festivity in Badajoz. If you find yourself in the city, the Badajoz Carnival Museum is not to be missed. It is situated in La Poterna building.
This is where you can really get to understand what the carnival means to the people of Badajoz. You'll be able to enjoy a display of the elaborate costumes which the troupes prepare each year to take part in the parade, a selection of the lyrics and music of the bands of street musicians, etc. Furthermore, as the carnival museum is both living and dynamic, it is very likely that if you make a return visit you will find new exhibits which you haven't seen before.
At the same time, you'll see the evolution of this festival from its pagan origins with its Saturnian calls to the costumes of the city's most recent carnival. In one of the rooms you'll find a recreation of a disguise costume workshop.
