  • For centuries this building has been a part of the defence line on the border with Portugal, it was very important for the Order of Alcántara and nowadays it is very well preserved and habitable.

This fortress is private property and together with the Alburquerque, Mayorga and Azagala castles, it forms a solid line of defence against the nearby border with Portugal.

It has been head of the Encomienda of the Order of Alcántara since the 13th century. The oldest parts of the building which have been preserved date from the 14th century, but over the following centuries it has undergone many renovations and reforms.

It is made up of an interior and an exterior enclosure. The exterior enclosure is a quadrangular construction with cylindrical towers at the corners. In the interior there are four corridors, the keep and the prison tower.

The residential function of this building is easy to see, with galleries open to the outside and a cloistered patio, all in the manner of an urban palace.

The fortress is perfectly preserved and also in use.
