This archaeological ensemble, situated in the municipality of Bohonal de Ibor, in the province of Cáceres, was moved stone by stone to prevent it from being covered by the water of Valdecañas reservoir.
Augustóbriga was a Roman city built on the banks of the Tagus, between Mérida and Talavera de la Reina. Later on its name changed to Talavera la Vieja, a town that was flooded in 1963 and is now underwater in Valdecañas reservoir.
Parts of two temples were rescued and were taken to a nearby hill to keep them away from the reservoir, which was growing. Today you can find them next to the road between Navalmoral de la Mata and Guadalupe, in the municipality of Bohonal de Ibor, in the northeast of the province of Cáceres. They are known as "los mármoles" (the marble buildings), even though they are made out of granite. -
