  • With reenactments, street performances, poetry, theatre and gastronomy activities, Almendralejo pays tribute to two great Romantic literature authors who were born in the town.

Almendralejo is the birthplace of José de Espronceda (1808-1842) and Carolina Coronado (1820-1911), two of the most representative exponents of 19th-century Spanish Romantic literature. Any Spaniard will be able to recite to you the famous verses from Espronceda’s "Song of The Pirate": The breeze fair aft, all sails on high,/ Ten guns on each side mounted seen,/ She does not cut the sea, but fly,/   A swiftly sailing brigantine.

To pay tribute to these two great authors and disseminate their work, in early June the capital of Tierra de Barros organizes the Literary Route on Romanticism, in October 2017 declared of Tourist Interest in Extremadura.

For several days there are historical re-enactments, performances, poetry recitals, parades, concerts and competitions, among other activities. There are also children´s workshops, fencing displays, a craft market and traditional trades. In addition, the 'Carolina Coronado Novel Award' is presented, organized by Almendralejo Town Hall and whose jury panel is composed of writers of renowned national prestige.

In the land of good wine and cava, the Literary Route on the Romanticism proposes wine tasting sessions, visits to wineries and "romantic tapas" prepared by establishments all over the town.
