Different towers from the Almohade era that were used as vantage points and places of protection are preserved in the city of Badajoz. The most emblematic one is the Espantaperros tower.
The tower known as Espantaperros, in Badajoz, was constructed by the Almohades in the year 1170 under the caliphate of Abu Yaqub Yusuf.
The tower has an octagonal layout, stands over 20 metres tall and is divided into three sections. From the outside one can observe a construction with solid walls and blind arches, as well as a terrace with battlements. A square-bodied brick construction, however, rises up above it, from where lookouts could communicate with the other watchtowers of the town of Badajoz. The inside is a solid construction with a central hollow containing two different storeys, with a small, square, vaulted chamber in the middle.
