This town in the province of Badajoz has a long musical tradition, as is borne out by its local festivals, but in addition it has fertile lands where wine with protected denomination of origin is produced.
Also known as the Music Town, Villafranca de los Barros is a municipality in the province of Badajoz with extensive, fertile lands with clayey soil, surrounded by the Alange, Hornachos and Fuente del Maestre mountains.
Inhabited since prehistoric times, its greatest period of development began in the age of the Catholic Monarchs. And in the 18th century, when the hitherto-village became a town, it started to become one of the most important wine-producing municipalities in the region. It still is today, now under the denomination of origin of Ribera del Guadiana.
Its most famous fiesta is related to the world of wine, too - the grape harvest festival, or Fiesta de la Vendimia, with the traditional Velá de la Virgen de la Coronada. This Festival of Tourist Interest in Extremadura is held in September.
And as one might expect, the town is a fundamental stop on the Ribera del Guadiana Wine Route, although it also forms part of the Silver Way, and consequently of the Route of Santiago de Compostela from western Andalucía, known as the Southeast Route-Silver Way.
And as a way of discovering Villafranca in more depth, what could be better than a visit to the Historical-Ethnographical Museum, the MUVI?
