  2. Tierra de Barros and Zafra

Paradise in the heart of Badajoz

A region located in the very centre of the province of Badajoz, rich in gastronomy, cultural events and historical and archaeological remains.

Coinciding with part of the Silver Route we find the region of Tierra de Barros and Zafra-Río Bodion, comprised of 31 municipalities.

If you visit this area, you will realise that it is one of the most important wine-producing regions in Spain. As well as its excellent wine, which falls under the Ribera del Guadiana Denomination of Origin, you can enjoy the delicious gastronomy, which includes a wealth of top-quality cold cuts, agricultural produce and game. Certain typical dishes are famous in this area, such as 'pisto' (a kind of ratatouille), the lamb stew, 'migas' (literally 'crumbs') or the game casseroles.

And you definitely should not miss the Roman ruins that remain in Medina de las Torres (Contributa Iulia). Moreover, in Alange you will find the famous thermae, declared a Historical and Artistic Monument. The spa already existed as such in the 3rd century, and the Romans used it as a temple of health and well-being.

If you are lucky enough to come at the right time of year, there are several festivals that are well worth taking the time to enjoy: Las Candelas de Almendralejo, Las Cruces de Mayo de Feria, or the re-enactment of the Battle of La Albuera during the Spanish War of Independence, all of which have been declared Festivals of Tourist Interest in Extremadura.

If you love history, this area will not disappoint you, especially if you visit Zafra - the Ducado de Feria is present in every single nook and cranny of town, and indeed in the entire region. Particularly outstanding is the building that is now the Parador, and was a fortress in the 15th century; but Zafra has numerous monuments amongst its heritage; its large and small squares (Plaza Grande and Plaza Chica), the Colegiata de La Candelaria church, erected in 1546, inside which there are three altarpieces, one of them by Zurbarán and another by Churriguera; and a host of convents.

Burguillos del Cerro, Fuente del Maestre and Hornachos contain historical sites that will take you by surprise, and still in the area, do not forget to visit to the altarpiece of Calzadilla de los Barros, which has been declared a National Monument.

There are several routes in the region to suit the tastes of all visitors. So come on, don't miss any of them!
