Cornalvo Reservoir and Sierra Bermeja SPA and SCI

The Cornalvo Reservoir and Sierra Bermeja SPA and SCI space is located very near to Mérida, and forms part of the foothills of the Sierra de Montánchez mountains. In the north it stretches as far as the border of the province of Badajoz with Cáceres and in its centre lies the Cornalvo reservoir, of Roman origin.

Dehesas of holm-oaks and cork-oaks are predominant in this area. In the waters of the reservoir one can see otters and Mediterranean turtles. Of the fish that inhabit the reservoir, the most notable species is perhaps the jarabugo (anaecypris hispanica), as it is endangered.
