This town in the province of Badajoz was the place chosen to hide by the last Gothic king after the battle of Guadalete.
This town holds a great secret: the existence of the remains of an old Visigothic basilica where it would seem Don Rodrigo, the last Gothic king was found after the battle of Guadalete in 711 AD, at the outset of the Moorish invasion.
The parish church of San Pedro Apóstol, after whom the town was called, was built over the basilica. This modest, albeit interesting building, was constructed making the most of Roman remains that can still be seen today.
The town is a mere 1.5 km away from the Cornalvo Nature Reserve and the Sierra Bermeja mountain range. The ideal habitat for white and black storks, red kites, black-winged kites, bustards, Spanish and European pond turtles, Iberian midwife toads and Bosca's or Iberian newts. As well as being a perfect place for nature lovers and mountain sports' enthusiasts, not to mention those given to cycle touring.
Orienteering and environmental education activities, among others, can be pursued there. A veritable paradise for tourists who wish to enjoy the wealth of typical Extremadura plant and animal life. -
